From May 16th to October 16th you can enjoy a trip to scenic Newport
without the headaches of traffic and parking. Just take the
high speed ferry.
Local transportation will get you to the beaches, and to special events
like the jazz and folk festivals. Or bring your bicycle. Even an October
day offers adventure to those that like to take the less trodden paths.
Children from age 1 to 99 are sure to enjoy an afternoon at
Roger Williams Park Zoo,
open year round. This award winning exhibit is full of
surprises. Some lucky visitors witnessed the birth of
a baby giraffe on a recent Saturday (May 5th, 2007). The polar
bears are currently on vacation, but the penguins and
the snow leopards will be happy to see you.
Take a hike in the wilderness. Did you know Rhode Island has the
largest percentage of protected forest of any state in the U.S.?
But cover up, mosquitos and ticks are very friendly. Wear a hat,
light clothing, no shorts or short sleeves. Avoid dawn and dusk.
Head south on either side of the bay and you will eventually
reach a beach. If you like to plan more carefully, consult
your GPS, or get the summer issue of Rhode Island Magazine.
And do not forget the fried clams, chowder, and clam cakes
at the local shacks like Flo's and Iggy's.
